Solana is about to cut transaction finality by nearly 99%

Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko weighs in on what the upgrade actually changes, and where finality really matters most.

Solana is about to get significantly faster.

A major upgrade expected to land in September will cut transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds, a reduction of nearly 99% that developers say will make the network feel almost instantaneous for end users.

The upgrade has been circulating in developer circles for weeks, but it gained fresh attention this week after Yakovenko, widely known as Toly, weighed in with his own take on where faster finality actually matters most.

What finality actually means

Finality is the point at which a transaction on a blockchain is considered irreversible and fully confirmed.

On Solana today, that takes 12.8 seconds. After the September upgrade, the target is 150 milliseconds, putting Solana in a different category entirely when it comes to settlement speed.

For context, Visa's payment network processes transactions in roughly the same timeframe that Solana's upgraded finality would achieve.

The comparison matters because Solana has long positioned itself as the chain capable of handling real-world payment volumes at real-world speed.

Toly's take, it's about the cash register

Yakovenko's response to the upgrade discussion was characteristically direct. "Finality is really only important at the cash register," he wrote on X.

His point was that market makers and most trading activity don't actually wait for finality signals before updating prices, they operate on the assumption that transactions will clear and manage the rare rollback event when it occurs.

The practical implication of his framing is that the upgrade matters most for consumer facing applications, point of sale payments, retail crypto transactions, and any use case where a human is waiting at the other end of the transaction for confirmation before handing over a product or service.

Why September matters for Solana's competitive position

Solana has been under pressure this year. The token has struggled alongside broader crypto market weakness, trading near $73 as of this writing.

The September upgrade arrives at a moment when the network needs a technical catalyst to reinforce its positioning against competing chains.

BitFlyer's confirmation of a Solana listing on Japan's most regulated crypto exchange earlier this year was described as regulatory endorsement rather than just a commercial decision.

A near-instant finality upgrade adds a meaningful technical dimension to that credibility story.
