Matthew Hickman, Lehman Brothers'Institutional Investor-rated telecom analyst for Latin America, left the firm yesterday and will replaced in the next couple of days by Mickey Schlein, formerly Latin telecom analyst at Union Bank of Switzerland.
It is not clear whether Schlein's joining Lehman led to Hickman's departure. Latin America analysts at other firms said it would have been almost unworkable to have two top-name analysts sharing the prestigious telecom beat. So it's thought that Schlein's appointment, rumored for some days, was designed to force out Hickman.
Neither Hickman nor Schlein could be reached for comment.
Schlein's departure from UBS comes as no surprise. The planned merger of UBS with
has been dominated by the latter, leading to a slump in morale for UBS' New York and London equities research teams. Latin telecom research will now be headed by
, the SBC Warburg analyst.
