Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway isn't always picking winners -- and October has been tough month for the Oracle of Omaha, as well as other investors who also thought they picked a winner in IBM. It remains to be seen if a big buyback of $5 billion will beenough to buoy stock, but, if not, the company may need to consider alternative remedies -- like competitor H-P did earlier this year -- to keep activists quiet. Alternately, its cloud deal with Apple and its analytics play with Twitter is showing investors the legacy tech titan is still looking to keeprelevant in a world being eaten by software.
