Wild Day for Stocks With a Virtually Flat Close; Dow Lower
It was a volatile day on Wall Street. After dropping more than 200 points, the blue chips ended the session pretty much where they started -- just a bit lower. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq are also flat but slightly in the green. Small caps did well in today's trading with the Russell 2000 up 1.2%. Treasuries bounced back in the early afternoon. The 10-year yield rose 2.1%. Oil prices rebounded after dropping below $80. Crude for November delivery closed at $82.70. Energy was one of today's best sectors. Chesapeake Energy (CHK) was up nearly 17%. Dow components Chevron (CVX) and Exxon-Mobil (XOM) also closed with gains. Apple (AAPL) lost more than 1% as it showed off its latest iPads. The tech giant also said it would launch a wireless payment system on Monday. Netflix (NFLX) was another big decliner on Wall Street. The stock dropped more than 19% after the company revealed fewer subscribers signed up than forecast for the quarter.
