Why the NAACP Issued a National Travel Advisory Concerning American Airlines
Shares of American Airlines (AAL) - Get Report are falling after the carrier became the subject of a NAACP travel advisory.
Citing a "pattern of disturbing incidents reported by African-American passengers," the NAACP is warning African Americans to exercise caution when booking and flying American Airlines. The NAACP said a series of recent events suggest a "corporate culture of racial insensitivity and possible racial bias on the part of American Airlines."
The advisory went into effect on October 24, and will remain until further notice.
"We expect an audience with the leadership of American Airlines to air these grievances and to spur corrective action. Until these and other concerns are addressed, this national travel advisory will stand," said Derrick Johnson, the president and CEO of the NAACP.
