How's that portfolio looking? 

Rob Williams, vice president of financial planning at Charles Schwab, spoke with TheStreet about his tips and tricks for consumers heading into the new year. 

He went through a range of topics -- from the importance of re-balancing your portfolio to the steps investors can take to try to protect themselves when the market is volatile. 

Williams also weighed in on how apps that help people save money or start investing are positively affecting the behaviors of consumers. 

One key piece of advice that Williams reiterated was "pay yourself first," meaning that everyone should set aside money from their paychecks to put into savings.
