Independence Day is widely celebrated by Americans with family gatherings, cookouts, and fireworks but there are many obscure details about this tumultuous time in our nation's history that are left out of most history books.
The signers were initially not all in agreement about supporting the revolutionary act. The oldest signer, Benjamin Franklin was famously quoted saying, 'We must all hang together or most assuredly, we will all hang separately".
The document itself was printed overnight on July 4, 1776 and then distributed to all of the colonies, all army units, and some prominent members of society.
One of these rare printings was purchased for $4 at a flea market in 1989 where it was hidden in a picture frame. TV producer Norman Lear later purchased the document for $8.1 million.
