What We Know About the New York City Terror Attack
8 people were killed and 11 were injured after a motorist drove a rented truck on to a bike path along the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday, according to law enforcement officials.
The driver of the vehicle hit pedestrians and cyclists before colliding with a school bus. The suspect then exited the vehicle brandishing two firearms and was shot in the stomach by police before being detained.
AP reported that 5 of the people killed were Argentinian and 1 was from Belgium.
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Sayfullo Saipov, an Uzbekistan national who came to the United States in 2010. CNN reported that the suspect left a note in the vehicle in which he pledged allegiance to ISIS.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio took to Twitter after the attack to call it a "cowardly act of terror. President Donald Trump also responded to the attack on Twitter saying that it "looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person". Trump went on to state "I have just ordered Homeland Security to step up our already Extreme Vetting Program."
