What to Watch Thursday: Will the Fed Raise Interest Rates?

For Thursday September 17, all eyes are on the Federal Reserve. Will it raise interest rates for the first time in nearly a decade or postpone it? Regardless, investors will be paying close attention to the central bank's decision. The announcement is expected to come at 2 p.m. Eastern. Other key economic data include housing starts, also known as the new residential construction report, which is set to be released at 8:30 a.m. Economists are expecting housing starts to drop 3.2% in August, while they forecast housing permits to gain 3.7%. At the same time, we also get the jobless claims report. Initial jobless claims for last week are expected to be 275,000. New unemployment claims are compiled weekly to show the number of individuals who filed for unemployment insurance for the first time. There are also two major companies coming out with earnings. Rite Aid (RAD) reports its latest financial results before the market open and then Adobe Systems (ADBE) comes out with numbers after the market close. TheStreet's U-Jin Lee reports from New York.
