What Happens If Catalonia Declares Independence From Spain?
The leader of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, has declared that the autonomous region will declare independence from Spain "in a matter of days".
The comments were made by Puigdemont in an interview with the BBC. The leader stated that his government will "act at the end of this week or the beginning of next". It was the first time since he had sat down with the media since the unofficial independence referendum.
The threat of a declaration of independence comes after Spain's King Felipe VI said that organizers behind the referendum put themselves "outside the law".
The High Court in Spain is investigating the key individuals behind the referendum on suspicion of inciting rebellion against the state (sedition).
