In a press conference on March 20, President Donald Trump announced that Tax Day this year has been moved to July 15 and that, by mutual agreement, the U.S. border with Mexico has been closed except for essential travel. Earlier this week, the U.S. and Canada agreed to close their border as well in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Border closures with both Mexico and Canada will go into effect at midnight on Saturday, March 21.
“During a global pandemic [immigrants] threaten to create a public storm that would spread the infection to our border agents, migrants and the public at large,” Trump said.
Trump also spoke about interruptions to schooling due to the coronavirus and announced that the Department of Education will no longer be enforcing standardized testing.
“[The students have] been through a lot,” Trump said. “I think a lot of the students will be extremely happy. Some probably not. The ones that work hard, probably not. But it’s one of those things.”
The President reiterated that interest on federally held student loans is being suspended.
