A new policy in Tennessee could mean Volkswagen will recognize the United Auto Workers Union as a bargaining partner. Tenneessee Governor Bill Haslam is downplaying the significance of the new policy but union workers are hopeful it may represent a significant negotiating tool. Republican governor Haslam has been publicly critical of the union's efforts to represent Volkswagen workers at the Tennessee plant. The new policy would make the Volkswagen factory the first foreign auto plant in the South with United Autoworkers representation. Volkswagen has so far declined to comment on the new labor policy.
