Virginia Gov. McAuliffe Says 'Hallelujah' To SCOTUS On Gay Marriage
Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has supported same-sex marriage since his campaign for the state's top office in 2013 and he says Monday's announcement from the U.S. Supreme Court that it would not hear cases in five states barring gay marriage was a welcome relief. Governor McAuliffe said, 'I want Virginia to be open and welcoming to everyone.' One of Governor McAuliffe's first acts when he took office in January of this year was to issue an executive order protecting state workers from sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination. Governor McAuliffe said, 'At the end of the day, I have to grow and diversify an economy and you can't do that by putting walls up around your state...any time there are roadblocks, people say, 'I don't want to go to that state' and that's not helpful to growing and diversifying an economy.'
