One of the most influential people in politics and the business world has passed away at the age of 85.

Vernon Jordan who began his career fighting legal battles against discrimination in education rose to become the leader of several important civil rights organizations including the NAACP, The United Negro College Fund, and the National Urban League.

Later in his career, he became a major corporate influencer serving on the boards of companies such as American Express ( (AXP) ), JC Penny ( (JCP) ), Xerox ( (XRX) ), and many others.

Having spent much of his life contending with racism, he developed a forward-thinking strategy for defeating oppression. “My view on all this business about race is never to get angry, no, but to get even. You don’t take it out in anger, you take it out in achievement.”
