U.S.-led air strikes against Islamic State militants on Wednesday targeted oil refineries in Syria being used by ISIS. The Department of Defense says 13 airstrikes hit ISIS-controlled oil refineries in remote areas of eastern Syria being used to provide fuel to run ISIS operations and money to finance their continued attacks in Iraq and Syria. The plants produce 300 to 500 barrels of refined petroleum a day, generating as much as $2 million a day for ISIS operations. The military is still assessing the outcome of the strikes but says initial indications are they were successful and all aircraft safely returned to their bases.
