U.K. Supreme Court Rules Parliament Must Vote to Trigger Article 50
The U.K. Supreme Court has ruled that Parliament must hold a vote on triggering Article 50, which will start the formal process for Britain's exit from the EU.
The 8-to-3 decision could prove problematic for U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, who had planned to trigger Article 50 and begin the two-year ordeal of untangling Britain from the EU by the end of March. There was also some concern, as the justices decided that the U.K.'s devolved parliaments did not need to be consulted.
The decision comes shortly after May announced that Parliament would get a vote on the final Brexit agreement. It has now been reported that a motion could be presented to Parliament in less than 24 hours to ensure that the Prime Minister's timeline for Brexit is not interrupted.
