The parade commemorates the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789 - an event that marked a turning point in the French Revolution. This year's celebration also commemorates the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into the first world war. Eight U.S. planes joined the parade, along with a detachment of 145 troops on the ground.
