Trick or Treating for Profit: October Trading Strategies
Despite September's reputation for being the worst month of the year for the market, October has seen some of Wall Street's crashes, from 1929's Black Tuesday to 1987's Black Monday. This year, September bucked the trend and actually saw the market move higher. So what does that mean for October?
Four of our top columnists analyzed the market and shared their best investing advice and market commentary as Wall Street leaves a record-breaking September behind and the leaves begin to fall. Stocks expert Stephen "Sarge" Guilfoyle, bond columnist Peter Tchir, forex trader Douglas Borthwick and gold expert David Yoe Williams discussed what could move the market this October.
While the majority of our panelists agreed that the market is likely to continue headed upward, history is a reminder that October can pack more tricks than treats. "For the last 60 years or so, two-thirds of Octobers are positive and one-third are negative," David Yoe Williams said. "September being a good month kind of sets up October not being such a good month."
Will the market continue to push higher or should we be expecting something scarier than Halloween come the end of the month?
