New York City is gearing up for New Year’s Eve, when more than a million people will cram into Times Square to ring in 2016 and watch the ball drop. Millions more will watch the celebration from the comfort of their homes. TheStreet decided to get a jump start on the festivities, venturing to the Times Square viewing platform to get a sneak peak of that famous New Year’s Eve ball. Seeing it up close and personal, you can’t help but be impressed. The ball is far bigger and brighter than it looks from the street or on television. ‘This little ball is twelve feet in diameter, it weighs just under six tons. And these Waterford triangle crystals are illuminated by over thirty-two thousand individual LEDs,’ said Amy Huntington, President of Philips Lighting America, which has been illuminating the ball for sixteen years. TheStreet's Rhonda Schaffler has details from New York's Times Square.
