The fourth quarter is typically a strong one for stocks, and this year looks no different, says Sam Stovall, U.S equity strategist for S&P Capital IQ. Stocks perform best in the November through April time frame, rising about 7% during that period, compared to less than 2% from May through October, according to Stovall. Stovall says the best performing sectors in the fourth quarter typically are information technology, with an average gain of 6.6%, and consumer discretionary and staples, with an average gain of 6.3%. Stovall says while there may be uncertainty and stock market volatility ahead of the presidential election, he expects markets will performing strongly after that.
