People in Hurricane Irma's Path Are Downloading Zello App Because of This Key Feature

Walkie-talkie app Zello has shot to the top of Apple's app store chart in America during Hurricane Irma, as Americans look for a way to communicate when phone networks are down.

The app has risen above Alphabet's (GOOGL) - Get Report YouTube, Facebook (FB) - Get Report  and Snap's Snapchat (SNAP) - Get Report , in the chart.

Zello started its life in 2007 in Russia as Loudtalks and surpassed 100 million users in February. In the past 24 hours, over 1 million people, mostly from Puerto Rico and Florida, have downloaded it.

Zello allows users to communicate live with people via the app by touching and holding a button. It doesn't require a mobile network but does need an internet connection.
