Let's talk about bank earnings.

Starting Tuesday, Jan. 14, the big banks are reporting earnings.

Citigroup (C) - Get Report, JPMorgan (JPM) - Get Report and Wells Fargo (WFC) - Get Report will kick off earnings season before the bell Tuesday.

Then, later this week, we'll hear from others, such as Bank of America (BAC) - Get Report and Goldman Sachs.

Jeff Marks, senior portfolio analyst with Action Alerts PLUS joined TheStreet to break down what investors need to watch in the bank earnings report.

"So with the banks, I think you want to pay attention to the net interest income line. Really, that's just going to be the money that they make off of their interest-bearing assets, uh, compared to the money that they have to spend on interest-bearing liabilities. So it's basically the spread between what they on loans versus what they pay out to deposits. You want to pay attention to that line," said Marks.
