Sometimes, a small thing can turn into a very big deal.
Case in point: Pat Vihtelic, CEO and founder of meal kit company Home Chef, approached Kroger Inc. (KR) - Get Report about selling his meal kits to the grocery giant. After all, the company already sells the kits through Walmart Inc. WMT , so why not Kroger, too, thought Vihtelic.
Kroger and Home Chef kept talking, and by spring, the five-year-old startup and Kroger decided to not only merge, but to put Vihtelic in charge of Kroger's meal kit and prepared meals operation.
"We started with an innocent commercial conversation the end of last year, us thinking about selling our meal kits through Kroger," Vihtelic told TheStreet when he popped in the office on Thursday, May 30. "We got to know their team and they got to know our team, and we decided to do something a little more strategic then just a business or commercial partnership."
