Apple isn't the only brand to make waves with smartphones

Since 2008, Google (GOOGL) - Get Free Report has been trying to prove it is a contender in a smartphone market dominated by the Apple (AAPL) - Get Free Report iPhone and the Samsung (SSNLF) Galaxy. Though Google has never found consistent success in marketing mobile devices, it has maintained a foothold in the market and may have just made a move that will give Apple CEO Tim Cook something to worry about. 

Google just announced a $1.1 billion deal with Taiwanese smartphone supplier HTC. Two thousand HTC employees will formally join Google's staff to help develop its smartphones and other devices and Google will receive a non-exclusive license for HTC's intellectual property. 

Following in the heels of the Google Pixel, Google is expected to unveil a new line of products on October 4. But does Google have a chance with all the hype surrounding the upcoming iPhone X
