With the release of its Super Bowl LIV commercial, “The Cool Ranch," PepsiCo's (PEP) - Get Report Doritos is once again counted among the most talked-about commercials in the ad frenzy surrounding the big game.
Starring Lil Nas X and Sam Elliot with a “Wild West” scene-setter, Elliot and Lil Nas X are shook by a "Bassquake" felt and heard from a distance, as the camera pans to Lil Nas X riding his horse to a well-known beat toward the "Cool Ranch" in honor of the chip's second most popular flavor.
He blasts the volume to the speaker on his saddle which is playing his #1 hit "Old Town Road." Billy Ray Cyrus who sings with Lil Nas X on "Old Town Road" also makes an appearance in "The Cool Ranch."
Doritos is a major player in the Super Bowl advertising game. According to AdAge, since Doritos first began producing commercials during the Super Bowl, they have had spots in 17 of the 53 Super Bowls played.
These ads have a combined play of 995 seconds during 32 total commercials aired. Adjusting for inflation, they have spent $85.7 million since they have started buying up ads for the most watched sporting event of the year.
For nearly a decade, Doritos did not buy any ads during the Super Bowl. Doritos changed how everyone looked at Super Bowl ads, when in 2007, it released the first ever consumer-created Super Bowl ad.
The ad did well on its own account, winning the fourth best commercial of the game, according to USA Today.
