Daily Coronavirus Update
There are over 22.4 million cases of the virus worldwide, with over 788,593 deaths. According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. has surpassed 5.5 million cases with over 173,204 deaths. Per the COVID-19 Tracking Project, there were 45,103 new cases reported Tuesday. 680,934 new tests were reported. And 1,416 deaths were reported yesterday.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that 1.106 million Americans filed for first-time jobless benefits for the week ended Aug. 15, up from a revised 963,000 claims the week earlier. Economists polled by FactSet had been expecting claims of 920,000.
Continuing claims, which are the number of people not just filing but staying on unemployment benefits, came in at 14.844 million for the week ended Aug. 8, down from a revised 15.480 million the week before.
The continuing claims numbers are reported with a one-week lag, but are considered a better gauge of the labor market.
While generally trending lower in recent weeks, the numbers continue to reflect companies’ ongoing struggles to remain open, productive and in need of workers, particularly with the coronavirus’s resurgence in many regions across the country.
FanDuel Situation in N.J. and Pa.
FanDuel customers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania are having trouble getting on the platform. Some customers have been locked out since Sunday.
According to FanDuel’s publicity director Kevin Hennessey, the company is having trouble while “migrating our account and wallet functions, so customers would have single logins and one wallet in PA and NJ for their fantasy, sportsbook and casino accounts."
According to Legal Sports Report, in addition to not being able to login, some customers have experienced their balances being wiped out, failure during the location verification checks, deleted account history and the inability to deposit.
