The S&P 500 needs a catalyst to break out of its recent range of 2,550 and 2,670.

That's the assessment from David Keller, president of Sierra Alpha Research.

That catalyst could be earnings, according to Keller, which kicked off Friday with results from JPMorgan Chase (JPM) , Citigroup (C) and Wells Fargo (WFC) .
