Sony's mobile phone division proved a heavy burden on the electronics giant's last quarter earnings. Losses ballooned to $1.2 billion on Friday despite a 7% increase in quarterly sales. The Japanese company saw improved performance in its television, camera and games businesses, with quarterly sales of $17.3 billion. But it wasn't enough to prop up the faltering mobile communications division which recorded a $1.6 billion operating loss for the quarter. Sony has registered a loss in six of the seven past years, struggling with competition from the likes of Apple, Samsung and cheaper Asian rivals.
