A law designed to tackle hate speech and other criminal materials has come into effect in Germany.

Social media companies must remove "obviously illegal" posts within 24 hours or face a hefty fine of €50 million.

Individuals have been critical of the law because they believe that the 24 hour time limit is unrealistic and it has been described as one of the toughest censorship laws in the world.

This comes after British Prime Minister Theresa May said tech companies must go "further and faster" to remove extremist content and the leaders of France and Italy backed her call for an even shorter time limit.
