Short selling volumes are rising along with optimism in equity markets - but also signal concern around valuations and the viability of several businesses. JC Penney, Sears and Twitter are among the most shorted stocks in a market which notched 26% last year, creating a backdrop where companies are being punished for failing to meet expectations. Fading macroeconomic concerns and a market which is less sensitive to big swings on monetary policy are also conducive to a stockpickers environment - ideal for short sellers.
