Rightside Group Is Changing the Internet and Growing Beyond the .coms and .net
CEO Taryn Naidu tells TheStreet’s Jill Malandrino it is a very similar business model to a company like a GoDaddy. Recently, Rightside has ventured in a new area called Top Level Domains or TLD, or the acquisition of new domain extensions. Most people are familiar with .org or .com, but Naidu says there is a whole other world out there and Rightside has acquired 35 of them like .attorney, .ninja and .rocks. There are 280 million domains registered and of that 120 million are .com, but .com does not really have that much meaning and are readily available. The new extensions open up more opportunity and helps users identify what industry you are in and where you are located. Growth in 2015 will not come the .com sales because the registrar of record is Verisign which gets an 80% cut, but rather the new TLDs that Rightside gets to keep 100% of the economics. In addition, Rightside can use GoDaddy or Web.com to distribute the new extensions.
