Republicans Win the Senate but Should Note Close Call in Kansas
Republicans took back the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, giving the GOP control of Congress. Dr. Alexander Smith, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick, says it will be interesting to see whether Republicans approach the next two years with a sense of contriteness or if they'll be bolstered by their victory and will seek to indulge the kind of habits we've seen from the Tea Party when in Congress over the last few years. Smith says one of the most interesting Senate races took place in Kansas, where incumbent Republican Pat Roberts narrowly beat out independent Greg Orman. In a red state where the Republicans were almost defeated in the gubernatorial race as well as the Senate, Smith says it will be interesting to see if Republicans take that as a wake-up call to engage more proactively in bi-partisan, centrist politics.
