Remembering 9/11: 'I Saw Scenes Out of a Horror Movie,' Says Former NYSE Trader
A former trader and NYSE official remembers seeing 'scenes out of a horror movie' on September 11, 2001 and discusses how leaders at the exchange reacted to the terrorist attack. 'They were on the phone with Washington, trying to get a handle on what was going on,' said Dr. Bernard McSherry, a former governor at the New York Stock Exchange who now serves as Dean of the NJCU School of Business in Jersey City, New Jersey. 'We really didn't know what was happening. And it was during that period I remember the first building collapsed and we felt the ground shake.' Dr. McSherry says there was tension and some panic on the trading floor when traders realized the severity of the attack and as they tried to reach family and friends to tell them the news. Like many people who were in Manhattan's financial district on that day, McSherry struggled with his emotions in the months that followed the attack. He eventually left the exchange to work at New Jersey City University, where his office faces lower Manhattan. 'It's nice to see it rebuilding. It's nice to see it coming up from the ashes,' he said. TheStreet's Rhonda Schaffler has details from Jersey City, New Jersey.
