Record Finish for Dow and S&P 500; Nasdaq Stumbles, Closing in the Red

Major markets closed mixed on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 finishing at record highs. The Nasdaq, however, stumbled and closed slightly lower. Crude oil bounced back from a multi-year low. Futures rose $1.49 a barrel after U.S. inventories increased less than expected. But precious metals dropped sharply. Gold for December delivery fell for a sixth straight day, falling $22. Silver lost more than 3%. Earnings results propped stocks like Time Warner (TWX) higher. The company reported sales and earnings that beat expectations. Energy stocks had a good day. Transocean (RIG), NRG Energy (NRG) and Noble (NE) all gained in the session. The Nasdaq was weighed down by stocks like GoPro (GPRO), TripAdvisor (TRIP) and FireEye (FEYE). Some big names reporting earnings Thursday include Disney (DIS), AOL (AOL) and Cablevision (CVC).
