General Motor's recalls are not exactly behind us, but U.S. drivers were forgiving in the past summer months because they were drawn to GM's new pickups and sport-utility vehicles. GM sold $39.3 billion worth of automobiles in the last quarter, a little better than expected. Profit came in at 97 cents a share, also better than forecasts. GM has done well in North America and Asia, but the automaker has a big problem: Russia. The country's instability is weighting on General Motor's progress everywhere else. Overall in Europe, GM lost $387 million, much worse than a year ago. GM has recalled 30 million vehicles since the beginning of the year, more than all the other automakers combined.
