It was a frightening day for lawmakers who normally feel very secure in the Capitol building.
This is the first time that the Capitol building was breached in more than 200 years.
According to the Senate's website, August 24, 2014, marks the 200th anniversary of the burning of the United States Capitol by British soldiers during the War of 1812. British soldiers marched into the city, burning the Capitol and landmarks in their path.
The unprecedented day was captured in unsettling photographs. Watch the video to see how the day unfolded, as it happened.
