Pelé: The Political Situation in Brazil Is 'Complicated'
Brazil is a country that's well-known for its beautiful beaches, Rio Carnival, Samba music and some of the best soccer players on the planet. Perhaps the best-known of them all is Edso Arantes do Nacimento, or Pelé. His life story will once again be on the big screen when Pelé: Birth of a Legend has its worldwide premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday. Pelé, whose life has been chronicled in multiple books, films and documentaries, served as executive producer on the film, which centers on his childhood and relationship with his father. 'He was very tough with me," Pelé said. "If you want to be a good player, a good athlete, you must behave well, you must prepare yourself. I have a gift from God. I was born with this talent, but everything else I learned from my father and my family.' The film centers on the themes of hope and perseverance and is coming to theaters at a time when Pelé's home country is suffering from an economic downturn and a presidential political crisis. TheStreet's Ruben Ramirez has details from New York.
