Opening Bell: U.S. Stocks Climb as Japan Surges; Tesla Shares Rise on Musk Tweet
U.S. stocks opened higher on Monday with the S&P 500 hitting a fresh intraday record, buoyed by a surge in Japanese stocks and last Friday's better-than-expected jobs report. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index average rose four percent as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's party won additional seats in the upper house, which increases the chances of additional monetary stimulus from Japan's central bank. Oil prices remained flat Monday trading at $45.59 a barrel on worries of lower demand in Asia, though analysts said prices have been stabilizing. Tesla (TSLA) - Get Report shares rose after CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he's working on a 'top secret masterplan' and expects to unveil more details shortly. The message was similar to a blog post Musk wrote back in 2006, which detailed what later became the Tesla Model S and Tesla 3 sedans. TheStreet's Scott Gamm reports from Wall Street.
