For the second day in a row, the stock market is reflecting optimism about a potential decline in the spread of the coronavirus. All three major indices were up Tuesday morning.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded 846 points higher at the open. The S&P 500 gained 3.2% and the Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.8%.
The number of confirmed global cases of the coronavirus has risen to over 1.3 million, according to Johns Hopkins, and deaths increased to over 74,800. The U.S. has more than 368,400 cases of the coronavirus, the most in the world. Deaths in the U.S. have risen to over 10,900.
Still, data that the rate of the death toll from the coronavirus and new infections may be hitting their peak boosted U.S. equities on Monday.
China reported no new deaths from the coronavirus on Tuesday. In New York, what some are calling the epicenter for the outbreak in the U.S., deaths have been flat for two days.
