Midday Report: Pending Home Sales Disappoint; U.S. Stocks Mixed

U.S. stocks were mixed as losses in Coca-Cola offset big gains for Apple.

Stocks were mixed as earnings-driven losses in Coca-Cola (KO) - Get Report offset big gains for Apple (AAPL) - Get Report . Twitter (TWTR) - Get Report was also dragging on markets after issuing a worrying third-quarter outlook. Pending home sales edged higher in June, though not as fast as economists had expected. Home sales in which a contract has been signed but deal not yet closed was driven by growth in the Northeast and Midwest. Crude oil tumbled after an unexpected rise in weekly inventories. A rebound in West Texas Intermediate has recently been curtailed on worries over an increasing domestic supply glut. Panera Bread (PNRA)  shares rose after exceeding analysts' estimates in its second quarter. The fast-casual chain reported comparable bakery-café sales growth of 4.1 percent. The company said it had maintained momentum even in a slowing consumer environment. TheStreet's Keris Lahiff has details from Wall Street.
