Microsoft is said to be near a deal to buy Swedish company Mojang, which is behind the popular Minecraft video game, for more than $2 billion. Minecraft claims 16.6 million people have bought the PC/Mac version of the game and also is a top paid app in the Apple and Android app stores. It's facts like these that Mark Skilton, professor of practice at Warwick Business School, says Microsoft is really attracted to. Skilton says the acquisition presents an opportunity for Microsoft to attain a large user base, grow it and use those users to drive traffic across its platforms and generate more money.
