Mayor Steven Fulop’s Passion to Serve Jersey City Lends to Economic Growth
Jersey City is the second largest city in the state of New Jersey and Mayor Steven Fulop and his team have positioned it for further economic and population growth. The Mayor tells TheStreet’s Jill Malandrino that despite the fact politics and elected officials have a bad stigma associated with them, if you are in it for the right reasons, there is a real opportunity to impact people in a positive way and can actually be a noble calling. Fulop’s sense of service and community is derived from his experience in the United States Marine Corp and believes what he is doing is partial payback for being a U.S. citizen. He held positions with Goldman Sachs in Chicago and New York City, and following the September 11 terrorist attacks, Fulop joined the USMC for a tour in Afghanistan, driving him to get involved with politics and give back. His Wall Street experience is beneficial as it synergizes with what his team is trying to achieve for Jersey City. Fulop explains, residential construction, job growth and small businesses are booming, and there are many programs in place to keep this momentum going in a socially responsible fashion.
