Markets Await Alcoa Earnings Tuesday

The start of third quarter earnings season begins Tuesday, with aluminum maker Alcoa reporting financial results before the markets open.

Third quarter earnings season begins Tuesday, October 11, with aluminum maker Alcoa (AA) - Get Report reporting financial results before the markets open. The company is expected to post earnings of $0.12 a share on sales of $5.33 billion. During the same quarter a year ago, Alcoa reported earnings of $0.07 a share with revenue of $5.57 billion, representing a 4.3% decline in sales. Overall, third quarter earnings are set to fall 2.1% year-over-year for S&P 500 companies, according to FactSet. Meanwhile, it's a quiet day on the economic calendar with the National Federation of Independent Business' Small Business Optimism Index for September released at 6 a.m. EDT, which is expected to increase to 95, from 94.4 in August.
