The Tronc (TRNC) owned LA Times hiring Forbes' Lewis D'Vorkin as its new editor in chief is an 'out of the box' decision,' according to TheStreet's media columnist Ken Doctor.

"[He has] never edited a daily newspaper," said Doctor. "He has a lot of digital cred with Forbes but that is mainly from earlier in this decade when he pioneered getting good freelance content for cheap."

Doctor said the LA Times will focus on entertainment, but also zero in on the food, fashion and fitness categories.

Tronc shares are up 10.5% since the start of the year.
