Retail chain Kmart says it will provide customers with free credit monitoring in the wake of a data breach it discovered last week. Kmart said the store's payment data systems were infected with malware in early September. The company said the type of malware was undetectable by its current anti-virus systems. Although it was able to remove it, Kmart said it believes certain debt and credit cards have been compromised, although no personal information, debit card PIN numbers, email addresses or social security numbers were obtained by the hackers. As a result, customers who shopped from September though October 9 with a credit or debit card will be offered free credit monitoring on behalf of Kmart.
