Named one of the most innovative companies of 2016 by Fast Company, The Kitchen is a rare blend of a non and for profit business. It oversees restaurants which serve food from local farmers and purveyors in 'world-class neighborhood restaurants' made to feel like the kitchen in one's home while committing to environmentally-friendly practices. Co-founder Kimbal Musk (brother of Tesla's Elon Musk) spoke with TheStreet at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Los Angeles about what's lead to its current success. He says The Kitchen works with foundations on how to finance restaurants so they can be structured to have social impact and then The Kitchen looks to find communities where they can build them up. The company is now the largest single buyer in Colorado for locally grown products says Musk who has grown the industry from $4 million in 2004 to $20 million today. He draws some insights into growing the business as a board member of Chipotle saying, 'They've got an amazing supply chain' while still protecting the source and integrity of their food. Musk said they think more in terms of growing community by community rather than large scale growth, though eventually they'd like to have Kitchen restaurants around the world.
