Reality TV stars like the Kardashian sisters have replaced fashion designers as trend drivers, but a single clothing line is still not enough to save a struggling retailer, said Teri Agins, author of 'Hijacking The Runway'. Agins said the celebrities generally have no formal clothing design skills, yet give their design teams ideas that reflect their tastes. She added that celebrities are able to bring young buyers into department stores and discount retailers and a few like the Olsen sisters and Victoria Beckham have even crossed over into high end stores like Bergdorf Goodman. Finally, Agins said that new celebrities keep popping up faster due to social media and reality shows so the trend will likely continue.
