Kohl's is struggling, while Target and J.C. Penney are experiencing revivals of sorts. There are two particular concerns on Kohl's, one short-term and one long-term. In the short-term, Kohl's is persistently struggling in its private label apparel businesses. J.C. Penney is coming off a strong quarter for private label sales as a result of improved in-stock levels for the popular St. John's Bay brand. And longer-term, Kohl's is viewed as a destination retailer, a place where people go out of their way to visit. With many malls across the country being remodeled to include destination restaurants and grocery stores, a trip to Kohl's may seem completely out of the way by a consumer. TheStreet's Brian Sozzi reports.
