Iranians Head to the Polls to Vote in Presidential Elections

Iranians are heading to the polls today to vote in the country's presidential election, with state TV in Iran capturing images of long queues outside polling stations in major cities.

Current President Hassan Rouhni, the seventh President of Iran, is facing a challenge from hard-line opposition candidate called Seyyed Ebahim Raisos-Sadati.

56 million Iranians are eligible to vote in the presidential election.

Counting of the ballots will begin at midnight local time. The result is expected to be announced within 24 hours of the count.

"Everyone should vote in this important election. The country's fate is determined by the people," said Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
