Why Investors Should Avoid Department Store Stocks

Nancy Tengler, CIO of ButcherJoseph Asset Management, thinks that investors should avoid department store stocks. Here's her breakdown.

Should you be avoiding the retail sector?

"The retail sales numbers were surprising to me in that the market was surprised by them," said Nancy Tengler, CIO at ButcherJoseph Asset Management. "They were weak. We would expect them to be weak in government shutdown environment or the market volatility environment that we saw in December and all of the fourth quarter."

Tengler said that she recommended stocks such as Walmart (WMT) - Get Walmart Inc. Report , Costco (COST) - Get Costco Wholesale Corporation Report and Amazon AMZN instead of the department store tickers.

Curious about what that means? "We're staying away from the...department stores," Tengler responded.
